A couple of months ago, one of the boys asked me to teach him how to drive. I have to be honest in saying that it was not the most comfortable thing for me to do, in fact the first day I took him out we went to a church parking lot down the street. The key to this parking lot was that there is a speed bump every 50 feet or so. My way of controlling the speed....hehehe
We eventually graduated to school parking lots and then we cashed in on some lessons he received as a Christmas present. This teacher showed him the ropes of being on the road and taught him the specifics for mirror placements, techniques, and what to expect when he took the test. We eventually ventured out onto the road and he was doing a fantastic job. He was still uneasy and nervous but gradually got more comfortable.
Well, this week he took his drivers test and was so excited he called me, as I sat on the side of the road because I had just gotten pulled over, to inform me that he passed on his first try. I giggled and told him what I was in the middle of and excitedly congratulated him for his accomplishment.
We set out on this venture in order for him to be able to drive to prom this weekend, which he proudly yet nervously did. He wasn't expecting to go on the highway and had had no driving time with an adult doing so yet but the friends he was with took him in that direction. He called me that evening due to being too nervous to drive back home. I went and met him at his prom and encouraged him then had him follow me back home on back roads.
So much about this story just fills my heart. Two of the biggest things are 1) Seeing one of these boys accomplish something so big that gives them an incredible burst of confidence and accomplishment 2) Knowing that they know they can call on me in these big events of life.
I stand here tonight, so proud of him and the steps that he has taken and continues to take!!
